More Than They

“She has rebelled against My judgments by doing wickedness more than the nations, and against My statutes more than the countries that are all around her; for they have refused My judgments, and they have not walked in My statutes” (Ezekiel 5.6 NKJV).

It seems like just yesterday that Joshua was ushering the Children of God into their Promise Land. God was doing miracles left and right, and great walls of resistance tumbled down by faith, unleashing the fledgling nation of Israel into victorious independence. The people declared their allegiance to God. They would serve no other God, and they would obey His commands (Joshua 24.15-24). They rooted out the evil in their Promise Land and established themselves as a nation with only one King: Jehovah God! But it didn’t take long for the people to forsake their God, and soon enough, the Bible says in Ezekiel that they were more wicked than the other nations around them–nations that did not know God! How could this be? How could a Chosen People in love with their God drift so far away from Him and His commands? It is devastating to watch a blessed nation fall from the very Source of their blessing. God is the maker of all that is good, and He even works out the evil created by free-will into His eternal good for those who love Him (Romans 8.28). We need to be careful not to fall in love with the blessings more than the Blessing Maker. God is the gift! He is our blessing! Through Jesus Christ and His finished work on the Cross, we get to enjoy the Gift of God every day!

“O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot” (Psalm 16.5 NKJV).
